The Sointula
Soccer Club, BCSA and Members of the NIYSA (North Island Youth Soccer Association),
helped sponsor a 2005 soccer and HIV/AIDS awareness trip to South Africa and
Malawi.
In South Africa two
women's start up clubs were equipped, and 7 teams (two girls teams) had major
equipment upgrades.
Also a 4 team ladies soccer league was started. Finally we distributed equipment
at four high schools and 2 elementary schools, and this equipment was stipulated
to be used by boys and girls.
In Malawi two start
up and two existing women's teams were equipped. All four teams were put through
training sessions. Prizes were provided to start a formal league in which these
teams could play regularly.
Twelve men's teams were provided equipment upgrades, and two elementary schools
and one high school were equipped to provide both boys and girls soccer.
HIV/Aids awareness
and methods of prevention where discussed and 250 booklets were distributed
promoting HIV/Aids awareness and prevention.
